SEATTLE - The Huskies return home this week for the first time since Sept. 2, but the challenge of the Pac-12 remains large on any court, as a run of five straight top-25 opponents continues this Friday and Sunday with 17th-ranked Utah and 25th-ranked Colorado. No. 9 Washington (13-2, 3-1 Pac-12) is looking to start up another win streak after having an 11-match run snapped last time out at USC. Friday night's match with the Utes is Dawg Pack Appreciation Night, starting at 8 p.m. The Huskies and 25th-ranked Buffaloes go at 3 p.m. on Sunday, and both matches will be live on Pac-12 Networks.
Friday vs. Utah will be the Dawg Pack Appreciation Match, including a pregame tailgate and a Dawg Pack t-shirt pick-up. Sunday is the annual Dig Pick Match as part of October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Utah (12-3, 3-1 Pac-12) has only lost three matches and all three came in five sets against top-25 teams, one to Kentucky, 12-15, one to BYU, 16-18, and last week to Oregon, 19-21 in the fifth. Utah also has a five set win over then-No. 15 San Diego and a 3-1 win over No. 25 Colorado to start Pac-12 play. Utah is led by senior Adora Anae, a Second Team All-American last year who should become the Utah career kills leader this year. She leads the team with 4.25 kills per set hitting .305. Two more seniors, outside hitter Carly Trueman and middle blocker Tawnee Luafalemana, also make big contributions as Trueman averages 2.58 kills and Luafalemana hits .376 with 2.11 kills per set and 1.18 blocks per set. The Utes are hitting .291 for the year, which ranks second in the Pac-12 and 13th nationally. The Huskies have won 9 of the past 10 with the Utes.
Colorado upset Oregon last week and also held off Oregon State in five sets to go to 2-2 in Pac-12 play and 12-3 overall. The Buffs' only nonconference loss was to then-No. 3 Penn State, and they had a big 3-2 win at then-No. 22 Colorado State. Colorado also took Stanford to five sets in a loss on Sept. 24. Purdue transfer Alexa Smith leads the Buffs with 4.13 kills per set hitting .252 while junior middle Naghede Abu ranks second in the Pac-12 hitting .385 with 2.22 kills per set and 1.34 blocks per set. Abu was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, while freshman setter Brynna DeLuzio earned Freshman of the Week honors. Former Oregon Duck Frankie Shebby is second on the team with 3.13 kills per set. The Huskies have won 8 of the past 10 with the Buffs including both meetings last year.
