Washington Falls 1-0 To ASU Despite Double-Digit Shots
October 29, 2017 | Women's Soccer
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Washington Huskies dominated the ball but still took a 1-0 loss against the Arizona State Sun Devils, falling on the road despite recording ten shots. The Huskies are 9-8-2 on the season after today's loss and 2-6-2 in the Pac-12.
Sarah Shimer stopped four shots for the Huskies but came away with the loss, allowing just one goal in the game. Amanda Perez had three shots for the Huskies to lead the way offensively.
"Our effort was there but our execution was not," said Head Coach Lesle Gallimore. "We created four or five chances in the first half that would have resulted in a goal and needed to. When we put the ball down on the ground played we were good; we just had too many unforced turnovers in the middle of the field that fed their counter."
At 17', Shannon Simon led Kimberly Keever into the box toward the post but the goalie got a fist on the ball to punch the ground pass away as Keever stretched for an attempted shot. It was one of a number of near-misses for the Huskies in the game's first 20 minutes, as Washington had the ball cleared away just before it could record a shot several times.
Simon also had a cross in the 20th minute. The senior tried to curve the ball back into the danger area as she strode along the end line but had it end up on top of the net out of play.
A free kick on the wing at 22' gave the Huskies another chance for a dangerous entry. Dominique Bond-Flasza curved in a strong ball that Perez met along with a defender. Perez got her head on the ball but couldn't get enough power on it to push it toward goal, instead bouncing it wide.
Simon created another chance all on her own at 32'. The midfielder carried the ball, finding space in the middle of the field as the defense collapsed to shut off the Husky wings. Simon fired from 35 yards but got under the ball too much, sending it high and out of play.
The Huskies had two more good chances in the next minute and a half. After Simon's shot, the next Husky possession ended with Perez taken down in the box fighting for a loose ball with the call going Arizona State's way. After Shimer shutdown the Sun Devil counterattack, the Huskies had a counter of their own, this time ending with Anissa Dadkhah beating the goalie with her 25-yard shot but unable to curve it back within the posts.
Shots were 5-3 in Washington's favor in the first half, with Arizona State earning the only corner of the first 45 minutes.
The Huskies put three dangerous balls into the box in the 56th minute but came away without an official shot. Perez fed a centering pass on the ground toward Keever from inside the box but had it knock off a defender for a corner. The ensuing corner couldn't be redirected on goal, with the attack finally ending when Jessica Udovich's cross was cleared from a scrum.
Pascale Dumesnil found Perez unmarked in the middle of the box in the 73rd minute for a great header. Perez got all of it but just couldn't put it on goal with the goalie out of position, pushing it wide.
The counterattack hurt the Huskies again, with Arizona State scoring the game's first goal less than a minute later. A long shot from a sharp angle happened to find the perfect spot in the corner of the goal to put the Huskies down 1-0.
Perez had another shot five minutes later as the Huskies tried to tie the game back up. Perez shot with power from the corner of the box but it was too straight, going wide of goal without the curve necessary to find the net.
While the Huskies controlled the ball for most of the last ten minutes of the game, they could not find that one goal needed to tie the game back up. Keever had a looping shot at 85' that fell into the goalie's hands during one of Washington's many late pushes.
The last Washington chance came at 86' after Ameera Hussen was fouled 23 yards out on the left wing above the box. Dadkhah took the set piece and crossed the ball into traffic well but it was headed away from goal by the defense to seal the Arizona State win.
"We'll regroup and focus on beating Washington State and hope we get a chance at the postseason. That's what we are working for and I believe when we put our best 90 together we are a very good team," said Gallimore.
Washington has just one game remaining in the regular season. The Huskies will celebrate Senior Day on Friday, November 3 at 7:00 pm as they take on the Washington State Cougars in this year's Apple Cup.
