Huskies Shutout WSU, Tie 0-0
November 03, 2017 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington Huskies closed out the regular season with a 0-0 tie against the Washington State Cougars. That tie put Washington's record at 9-8-3, while Washington State moves to 9-7-3.
"We had enough of the play but it was just more of a defensive battle than anything else," said Head Coach Lesle Gallimore. "Our backline kept them in check, we defended them very well."
Sarah Shimer earned her 11th shutout in the game, setting a new single-season Husky record. The previous record of ten had been set by Kelsey Rasmussen in 2004. It was also the 15th shutout of Shimer's career, putting her fifth in Husky history.
Gallimore praised all the seniors for their play, saying that "this is a special group of players, the whole lot of them. What they've done for the program, they're leaving a legacy of hard work."
The Huskies first opportunity came on a juicy set piece at 7' when Kimberly Keever was fouled on edge of box with control of the ball. Simon took the free kick and sent her shot over the wall and the bar, going out of play.
In the 25th minute, Dominique Bond-Flasza and Amanda Perez came close to combining for a goal. Bond-Flasza sent in a hard cross at chest level from the right wing. With Perez rushing toward goal, the Washington State goalie was able to catch the cross just in time to stop the chance.
At 35', Shannon Simon's pass from the attacking midfield was blocked away for the first Husky corner. Simon's pass fell into traffic in the box. Perez had the first chance at the ball and was knocked off the ball. Olivia Van der Jagt was able to reach the loose ball and fired under pressure, sending her shot wide.
Shots were 4-4 after the first half of play, with neither team able to put a chance on goal.
The second half saw little offense as both teams shut down most any attack on goal. Shots were 8-7 at the end of regulation with no shots on goal in the game.
Just a minute into the first overtime, Anissa Dadkhah had one of Washington's better chances. The midfield found room to dribble into a scoring position and let loose with an open look from 20 yards. Dadkhah's shot carried, unfortunately, and went over the net.
In the 105th minute, Perez beat a defender with a dribble move, then fired from the top of the box. That shot was blocked, however, bouncing straight to the Cougars. That was the most dangerous chance of the extra period, with the game ending in a deadlocked 0-0 tie.
That wraps up the regular season for the Huskies. Selections for the NCAA Tournament will be made Monday, November 6.
