SEATTLE - The first half of conference play concludes this week for the 14th-ranked Huskies in the Bay Area. Washington will try to close the gap on Pac-12-leading and second-ranked Stanford this Thursday night in a match televised nationally on ESPNU. Washington will then have two days off in the Bay before facing California on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a nontelevised match that will be streamed online by the Bears.
Since winning both matches of its Pac-12 opening road trip, the Huskies have gone 1-1 in each of the past three weeks go bring their conference mark to 5-3. Two of the three defeats have been by two points in fifth sets, but the Huskies also have a pair of five set victories, going to show how closely contested nearly every conference match has been this season. Washington remained at No. 14 in the AVCA poll this week, and lost just one spot in the RPI going from 10th to 11th.
The Cardinal have won 10 matches in a row and are 8-0 thus far in Pac-12 play, having won at UCLA and USC last weekend, both in four sets. Stanford, the defending NCAA Champions, are leading the Pac-12 with a .300 attack percentage and are holding opponents to a .170 mark. Their only two losses both came against Penn State. Sophomore outside hitter Kathryn Plummer is leading the Pac-12 with 4.69 kills per set while sophomore setter Jenna Gray leads the league with 11.74 assists per set and is second with 0.47 aces. Junior middle blocker Tami Alade is hitting .478 in conference play, and averaging 1.61 blocks per set, both tops in the league. The Cardinal just moved ahead of UW in aces per set with 1.66, while Stanford is third in blocks per set with 3.06. Kevin Hambly is in his first year leading the Cardinal.
The Golden Bears are now 11-8 on the year and 2-6 in Pac-12 play, having lost their past four matches including a four setter at USC and a three set loss at UCLA last weekend. Their two wins came at home over the Arizona schools. Cal is hitting .241 on the year but their .222 opponent attack percentage ranks last in the league. Seniro Antzela Dempi ranks ninth in the Pac-12 in points per set with 3.72, helped by 0.52 aces per set that leads the league. Against USC, junior outside hitter Carmen Annevelink had a big match with 14 kills, hitting .367. First year head coach Matt McShane leads the Bears.
