Dawgs Start The Season With Two 7-0 Wins
January 13, 2017 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – For the second straight year, the Washington men's tennis team opened up their regular season with two 7-0 victories over Seattle U in a doubleheader today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"It was a thrill just to get back out on the court in the team matches," said head coach Matt Anger. "We've waited a long time for that."
In the first match of the day, last season's winningest duo on the team Enzo Sommer and Kawika Lam picked up a 6-0 win, with Jake Douglas and Gal Hakak defeating their opponents on court three to clinch the doubles point for UW.
Washington wasted no time in singles, taking all six matches in two sets each. First to finish was Sommer on court three, defeating Matt Alderson 6-1, 6-0, followed by freshman Amit Batta who picked up his first career win 6-1, 6-2. The Huskies grabbed the clinching point over Seattle on court two with Douglas defeating John Stormans 6-1, 6-2.
Joao Barra won his match 6-1, 6-1 on court four, while Sebastian Hawken and 60th ranked Mitch Stewart won their matches on courts six and one respectively to end the first match 7-0.
"We've been practicing pretty well and it was good to get started," said Anger. "Our guys did well today and it was good to get nine guys out there on the court tonight."
The second match of the evening began with singles, and more two set victories for Washington. Hawken and Lam won their matches almost simultaneously on courts five and six, with Douglas and Sommer winning their second singles matches of the day to clinch the second victory for UW. Piers Foley grabbed his first singles win of the new season 6-3, 6-0 over Jeremiah Kalmus on court four, while Barra defeated Stormans 6-1, 6-2.
Leading 6-0, the Huskies looked to close out the match for their second sweep of the night. Batta and Lam paired together to grab a win on court two 6-1, with Barra and Foley sealing the victory on court one. Hakak and Hawken were able to finish their match on court three, defeating Alex Chan and Adrian Sanabria 6-2.
"I'm looking forward to our next weekend at home, and then we're on the road," said Anger. "We have a lot coming up and I'm really looking forward to it."
The Huskies will remain in Seattle next weekend, hosting Utah State next Friday January 20th at 5 p.m., and Gonzaga on Sunday at noon.
