Huskies To Host Two Home Matches This Weekend
January 18, 2017 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – After opening up the 2017 regular season with two wins in a doubleheader last Friday, the Washington men's tennis team looks to continue rolling at home, as they host Utah State on Friday January 20th at 5 p.m., and Gonzaga Sunday the 22nd at noon in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
For the second-straight season, the Huskies began their schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Seattle, picking up two 7-0 victories last week. Joao Barra, Jake Douglas, Sebastian Hawken and Enzo Sommer each picked up two victories in singles, while eight Dawgs got a win in doubles. No. 60 Mitch Stewart grabbed his first singles win of the regular season, earning his team-leading seventh victory of 2016-17. Last year's ITA Northwest Rookie of the Year, Sommer played his first match of his career on court one in the second match against Seattle, defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-3.
Friday's matchup between Washington and Utah State will be the third time these two programs have met, with the Dawgs winning both previous contests. Head coach James Wilson is in his first season with the Aggies, joining the program from Texas Tech where he was an assistant coach. They are led by junior Jaime Barajas, who was ranked 123rd by the ITA this past fall after going 24-10 in singles last year. Utah State brings a 1-1 record to Seattle this weekend, opening their schedule with a 6-1 win over UC Irvine before falling to San Diego 1-6.
The Dawgs will look to remain undefeated against Gonzaga this Sunday, owning a 15-0 record all-time against the Bulldogs after defeating them last year 5-2. While six of their seven players are underclassmen, their young roster got off to a hot start this past fall, with four members of their squad earning double-digit wins in singles. They are led by head coach Peter MacDonald, who is currently in his 12th year at the head of the program.
Each match at the Nordstrom Tennis Center is free to attend, with pizza served between the doubles and singles matches.
