ORLANDO, Fla. – Husky junior Soham Purohit came up short today in his hour and forty four minute 1st round match-up with Mississippi State's Bryan Hernandez Cortes.
Purohit went down a break early in the first set. Cortes was serving for the set, leading 5-3, when Purohit earned a break point chance at 30-40, but Cortes saved it, and then he won the deciding deuce point to win the first set, 6-3.
Although a valiant effort was made by Purohit in the second set, rallying back from another early deficit down a break, the Bulldogs' Cortes ultimately prevailed in a tiebreaker. It was five points apiece in the breaker but Cortes won the last two to advance to tomorrow's second round by a score of 6-3, 7-6 (5).
This was the first NCAA Championships appearance for Purohit, which he earned by winning the ITA Northwest Regional title in October. He is the third Husky in the past four years to make NCAAs, following Clement Chidekh (2022) and Cesar Bouchelaghem (2024).
Purohit and the Husky Men's Tennis team will be back in action in January with matches at Hawaii on Jan 10th in Honolulu on Jan 17th, back on Montlake vs Nashville's Belmont Bruins at 11am PT.
