April 02, 2016 | Women's Basketball
INDIANAPOLIS – Saturday the 2016 WBCA Division I Coaches All-America Team was announced at the NCAA Division I Women's Final Four, including Washington guard Kelsey Plum. Plum becomes the first WBCA All-American in program history for the Huskies.
Previously called the Kodak or State Farm All-America Team, the WBCA honor is tops in women's college basketball. Plum becomes the first Husky to earn that honor after leading the Dawgs to the Final Four, while averaging 26.2 points per game, third best in the nation.
The 10-player All-America team includes five players competing in the Final Four, including Jamie Weisner of Oregon State and Moriah Jefferson, Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck of Connecticut. The rest of the team is made up of Nina Davis of Baylor, Kelsey Mitchell of Ohio State, Brianna Turner of Notre Dame, A'ja Wilson of South Carolina and Courtney Williams of South Florida.
Plum cemented her spot on the All-America Team with the Huskies run in the NCAA Tournament. She is averaging 26.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 7.3 assists during the Dawgs four-game stretch that has includes wins over Pennsylvania, No. 5 Maryland, No. 12 Kentucky and No. 13 Stanford.
On the season, Plum is now the nation's leader in points scored with 943, needing just 25 more to break the Pac-12 single-season record of Chiney Ogwumike of Stanford. Plum is already the Huskies' all-time leader in scoring with 2,401 points, despite being just a junior. She'll have a shot to break the NCAA scoring record next season, currently owned by Jackie Stiles at 3,393 points.
The 10-member team was decided from a group of 52 finalists by the selection committee at an in-person meeting held during the 2016 WBCA National Convention. It was announced today in a ceremony held at Bankers Life Fieldhouse during the 2016 NCAA Women's Final Four Super Saturday festivities.
“The 10 members of the 2016 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Team are well deserving of this recognition, and the WBCA congratulates them for their accomplishments this season,” said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. “These young women have worked to elevate themselves and their teams to an elite level and through their exceptional talents on the basketball court, they have lifted the women's game.”
This is the 42nd year of the WBCA Coaches' All-America program, which began in 1975. Once again all 10 members of the team were present to be honored in person during the ceremony. Remarkably, in the 42-year history of the program, none of the 420 Coaches' All-Americans thus far honored have failed to appear for the announcement.
Plum and the Huskies will compete in one of the national semifinals on Sunday, April 3, at 5:30 p.m., PT on ESPN2. The Dawgs will be competing in the first Final Four in program history as they look to join Cross Country, Softball, Rowing and Volleyball as Washington women's programs who have been NCAA Champions.
