Meggs Earns 800th Career Win As UW Takes Series At ASU
April 11, 2016 | Baseball
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Huskies endured a 2 hour, 26-minute rain delay in the top of the fourth inning and left the unseasonably rainy desert with a 6-1 win and a series victory over Arizona State Sunday at Phoenix Municipal Park.
Three Washington (16-11, 7-5 Pac-12) pitchers combined to hold Arizona State (17-12, 4-8) to two hits and the Huskies batted around in the fifth and eighth innings – scoring three runs both times – to give Coach Lindsay Meggs the 800th win of his 22-year career.
The Huskies clinched just their third series win on the road against Arizona State in team history. They have now won the last two road series against the Sun Devils after previously only winning two-of-three in 2004.
“There is a sign up here at the ballpark that shows five national championships and 21 trips to the College World Series,” said Meggs following the win. “Regardless whether they're playing well or not, this is a tough place to win. It's a good win and a great series win for us.”
Troy Rallings took the mound for the Huskies in the bottom of the fourth inning of a scoreless tie after the rain delay and threw a season-high six innings, allowing a run – just his third allowed this season – on two hits, while striking out two batters. He improved to 3-1 on the season and figured in both wins for the Huskies during the series, as he earned a two-inning save in game one.
The Huskies sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored three times to grab the 3-0 lead. ASU pitcher Reagan Todd (1-3) failed to find his command and walked four batters in the inning, the fourth issued with two outs and to Gage Matuszak forcing in the first run of the ballgame. After a pitching change, Joey Morgan greeted Eli Lingros with a single to center field on the first pitch he saw to score two more runs.
The Sun Devils got on the board in the seventh when Ryan Lillard scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a double to cut the Huskies lead to 3-1, but UW answered back in the top of the eighth inning with three more runs to increase their lead to 6-1. Josh Cushing singled in one run, KJ Brady doubled home another and John Naff walked with the bases full to score the final run.
Washington had 12 hits in the game with nine different players collecting at least one hit. Brady (2 for 4, 2B), Naff (2 for 3, RBI) and MJ Hubbs (2 for 4) had multi-hits for the Huskies.
Washington returns home and will play 10 games in Seattle over the next two weeks, starting with a mid-week game Tuesday, April 12 against Seattle University at Husky Ballpark (5:00 p.m.).
