Huskies Rain Over Pacific, 6-2
March 12, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The Washington Baseball team beat Pacific, 6-2, in the first meeting of a four-game series Friday night at Husky Ballpark. The Huskies scored twice in the second, third and seventh innings to support a strong pitching performance by starter Noah Bremer (2-0).
The teams withstood a 75-minute rain delay and played through a persistent drizzle for much of the game, but were able to fight through the muck to get in nine innings.
Washington (7-4) scored a pair of runs with two outs in the second to jump to the early 2-0 advantage. After designated hitter Gage Matuszak walked and second baseman Chris Baker doubled, catcher Joey Morgan drove both runners home with a double into the left-center gap off Pacific starter Will Lydon (0-3).
Pacific (5-9) scored an unearned run in the third off Bremer, but his offense picked up two in the bottom half of the inning to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead. KJ Brady and Jack Meggs started the inning with back-to-back singles, and after a John Naff sacrifice bunt, third baseman Josh Cushing singled to left scoring Brady. Meggs also came around to score when the left fielder Danny Mayer misplayed the ball.
With a 4-1 lead, Bremer cruised through the Pacific lineup. He retired 17-straight Tigers' batters at one point, a streak that ended when Danny Mayer hit a two-out triple to right field in the eighth inning. Mayer came around to score when the next batter Gio Brusa reached on a throwing error by Baker at third base.
That would be the last batter Bremer (2-0) would face, as he gave way to Spencer Jones who came in to record the final out of the inning. Bremer left after 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs – both unearned – on seven hits and in the process lowered his season ERA to 0.64. He struck out five and walked one in earning his second win of the season.
Washington added two runs in the bottom of the eighth to give themselves some breathing room. Meggs scored on a wild pitch and pinch-runner Karl Kani scored when Matuszak was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Troy Rallings pitched a perfect ninth to run his scoreless innings streak to 20 2/3 innings, which spans 12 games dating back to last season.
The Huskies had eight hits on the night – three of which were doubles. Baker and Morgan were the only hitters with two hits – both going 2 for 4 on the night.
The Huskies and Tigers continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader at Husky Ballpark. The first game is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. PT, with the second game 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
