Huskies End Regular Season With A Loss, NCAA Tournament On The Horizon
November 10, 2016 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE, WASH. -- The Washington men's soccer team wrapped up the 2016 regular season with a 0-1 loss to Oregon State Thursday night.Prior to the match, the program honored six seniors- Beau Blanchard, Jose Ocampo, Mason Robertson, Auden Schilder, Justin Schmidt and Steven Wright.
Danny Gavin, who is also a senior academically, was recognized Sunday night as he was not at tonight's match due to a family wedding.
"We always want to win games," said Washington head coach Jamie Clark. "But in this case it was about seeing and learning a few things before the NCAA Tournament. I think we took a lot from this game. It was also great to celebrate our seniors, but I'm glad for their sake we get another game as this group still has a lot of winning to do!"
After the night's match the team moved to 13-6-0 overall and 7-4-0 in the conference.
The match's lone goal came in the 23rd minute after freshman David Norman Jr. converted a penalty kick.
Goalkeeper Auden Schilder had five saves for the night.
Junior Henry Wingo led the offensive fight for the Huskies with four shots, two on goal. Sophomore David Coly had the team's closest scoring chance with a shot from six yards that was just inches too wide.
Mason Robertson, Steven Wright, Beau Blanchard and Handwalla Bwana each recorded one shot.
Despite the night's loss, the Huskies are still looking to finish in the top 16 in the NCAA RPI. Finishing in the top 16 means the team will have a bye week for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and have a potential to host a second round match.
Championship seeds will be announced Monday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. PT. The team's status will be announced immediately following the selection show,
