Explosive Offense Advances Huskies To The Third Round Of NCAA Tournament
November 20, 2016 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE, WASH. - A powerful offensive presence led the No. 14 Washington men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over New Mexico Sunday evening in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The win advances the Huskies to the third round of the tournament where they will face Denver on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 5 p.m. MT/4 p.m. PT.
The advancement marks the team's fourth time playing in the third round of the tournament and their 23rd in the tournament overall.
The Lobos were first to put a goal on the board after a pass from Niko Hansen found the feet of Patrick Khouri who netted the ball in the 21st minute. The shot was one of five from New Mexico, but the only one allowed by goalkeeper Auden Schilder.
Just seven minutes later, defender Justin Schmidt sent a corner kick soaring over the chaos inside the box to the inside of the far left post, tying the score at 1-1.
The goal by the redshirt senior ignited something in the Husky offense as they entered the half. The team took the field on a mission and with something to prove.
Less than two minutes into the half, Scott Menzies gave the Huskies the lead for the first time in three matches off a pass from Henry Wingo. Just ten minutes later, Menzies assisted freshman Elijah Rice with a long pass that found the back of the net to give the Dawgs a 3-1 lead.
The two goal advantage was not enough for the Huskies, as they continued to charge the Lobos' net. Senior captain Beau Blanchard earned his first goal of the season with an unassisted shot that put the win out of reach for New Mexico in the 64th minute.
The squad totaled for 16 shots on Sunday, three from Wingo, two from Kyle Coffee, David Coly, Menzies, and Rice and one each from Corban Anderson, Schmidt, Justin Fiddes, Handwalla Bwana and Blanchard.
