October 07, 2016 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Playing in the consolation bracket for singles at the ITA All-American Championships today, No. 68 Mitch Stewart battled out a tough match for a big win over No. 27 Nick Crystal of USC 6-4, 6-7(6), 7-5.
"This was a back and forth match today where each guy seemed to have the momentum," said Washington head coach Matt Anger. "Nick hit so many winners, but somehow Mitch was able to be the last one standing."
For the second time in the same tournament, Stewart found himself in a rematch from last season, after East Tennessee State's David Biosca avenged his loss to Stewart from last season yesterday. This time however, Stewart avenged a loss of his own, when last season's court one matchup in UW's 4-3 upset of No. 8 USC featured the two, with Crystal coming back to win 1-6, 7-6(5) 6-3. In yet another close three-setter today, the 68th ranked player in the country from Federal Way, Wash. came out on top.
This is Stewart's first win over a ranked opponent this season, and highest ranked opponent he has defeated as a Husky. His previous high came during his freshman season when he defeated Ben Lott of Drake who was ranked 34th.
Stewart will continue play in the consolation bracket tomorrow, which you can follow by checking out the ITA event link above, or by checking out the team's website at GoHuskies.com.
