Washington Drops Heart-Breaker to Penn State Despite Incredible Efforts
April 10, 2026 | Men's Tennis
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Penn - The University of Washington Men's Tennis Team dropped a conference match 4-3 to Penn State this afternoon. With this result, Washington is now (8-14) on the season and (2–8) from Big Ten play. The Huskies will return to play in two days time, Sunday, April 12th, for a match against second ranked Ohio State in Coloumbus, Ohio.
Clinching their fifth doubles point in their last eight matches, the Huskies would take a point advantage in the matchup with Penn State. Newly crowned ITA No. 45 doubles pair, Soham Purohit & Brett Pearson would again combine for one half of the point with a win from the No. 1, followed by a point clinching win from Stephane Kamendje & Rohan Belday at the No. 3. This marks the second time in Big Ten play this season that the Huskies have won consecutive points from doubles play.
Moving to the singles matchups, in his first match in three weeks not against ranked competition, Stephane Kamendje would go to defeat his opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(1), ending his singles five match winless streak to give the Huskies their second point of the match.
Soham Purohit would go on to win his singles match, snapping a three match winless streak of his own, by a 6-3, 7-6(3) defeat of the State No. 1 Micheal Wright. This result would even the match, however both endings would not be possible without Brett Pearson's comeback in set two as he was down 5-2 before forcing a 7-6(5) win and third set for a chance to clinch the match.
In that third set however, the Nittany Lions would prevail, clinching the match after an early back-and-forth match that was tied 1-1, before closing 6-2 and giving State the final point.
