UW Finishes First Day At USTA/ITA Northwest Regional

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Washington men's tennis team finished up their first day of play at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional today on the University of California's campus, with two pairs in doubles and three in singles advancing.
"We had an up and down first day," said Washington head coach Matt Anger. "We were unlucky that Jake Douglas lost in his first match, but the highlight of the day was freshman Amit Batta getting his first college wins in singles and doubles."
The day began at 8 a.m. with one Husky winning their first round matchup in singles and two pairs winning their opening matches in doubles. Freshman Amit Batta was the lone Dawg to survive the first round, coming back to defeat Sacramento State's Louis Chabut 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 to join Gal Hakak, Mitch Stewart, Enzo Sommer and Jake Douglas, who all received byes, in the second round.
In doubles, Hakak and Douglas defeated Legaspi & Walsh of Sacramento State 8-2, while Batta paired with Stewart to defeat Joenhagen & Kumthonkittikul of San Francisco 8-1 to advance to tomorrow's second round of doubles.
In the second round of singles, Hakak grabbed a great 7-5, 6-3 win over Mantas Bugailiskis of Fresno State to advance, while Mitch Stewart defeated Max Pham of UC Davis.
"Gal played a very solid match in singles," said Anger.
Sophomore Enzo Sommer also won in his first singles match of the day and will play in tomorrow's third round. Batta and junior Jake Douglas each lost tough matches and were eliminated from the main draw.
Due to weather, tomorrow's matches will be moved to Burlingame, Calif. to be played indoors, where the Huskies faced Stanford last season.
