Washington Falls To SDSU In Overtime
October 02, 2016 | Men's Soccer
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. β After shutting out UCLA the Huskies continued their conference opening weekend at SDSU. The Huskies finished with a 0-1 loss at the SDSU Sports Deck.
"Today was a missed opportunity," said Washington head coach Jamie Clark. "Championship teams move on to the next game, and unfortuantely we didn't transition well enough from our big win on Thursday."Β
The match ended after SDSU's Travis Nicklaw scored the golden goal in the 91st minute. The goal was shot from eight yards and rebounded off Husky goalkeeper, Auden Schilder.
The two Pac-12 teams battled for ninety minutes, both ending regulation with 15 shots. Goalkeeper Auden Schilder recorded four saves before heading into overtime.
Washington opened in the first minute with a shot from Mason Robertson who totaled for four shots, and one shot on goal. Late in the first half Quentin Pearson aimed to take the lead for the Purple and Gold but the shot was saved, Handwalla Bwana followed up with another shot but was blocked by an Aztec defender.
The Huskies had several scoring opportunities throughout the match but the Aztec defenders pressured the offense and the goalkeeper, Adam Allmaras, saved six Husky shots.
"It was a tight game," said Clark. "And it was liekly going to be decided by a single instant. Unfortunately, we didn't take the chance so it's onto Thursday's game where we have a chance to make amends."Β
Aside from Robertson's four shots, Washington saw shots from Bwana (3), Coffee (2), Wingo (2), Pearson (1), Jackson (1), Wright (1) and Blanchard (1).
The squad returns home this week for the Pac-12 home opener on Thursday when they host the Stanford Cardinal. The match is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Husky Soccer Stadium. The match will be aired live on the Pac-12 Network. Tickets for the match can be purchased here.
