Huskies Fall in 2026 Season Opener
August 20, 2026 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE – Washington dropped the opening match of the season, falling to No. 18 San Diego 2-1 at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The reigning national champions were welcomed back to Husky Soccer Stadium warmly by the Husky faithful. 1,801 fans attended the match, the most UW men's soccer has ever had at a season opener. The previous high was 1,708 in 2000 when the Huskies opened against California.
The two teams battled in the opening 10 minutes without many attempts on either goal until a defensive miscue by the Huskies allowed San Diego a flurry of shots. Harrison Bertos made a goal line save of the first shot, but the second was buried and put the Torreros in the lead.
Washington grew into the match, collecting possession while building momentum, and even put the ball in the goal on a Harrison Bertos header, but the goal was ruled off for a previous foul.
San Diego then again found the goal in the 52nd minute.
The Huskies didn't relent, however. In the 77th minute, Zach Ramsey opened his 2026 account, scoring on a counterattack perfectly started by an Alex Hall deep pass. Ramsey slotted the ball home with his right foot to bring Washington back into the match.
The Dawgs pressed on for the equalizer, tallying four shots over the following three minutes, but the second goal didn't come.
In total, the Huskies launched 16 shots to San Diego's six, along with five shots on goal to the Terreros' four.
First year Jake Goetting was a bright spot for the Huskies. The rookie tallied six shots, two of which were on target while another two hit the woodwork.
Goetting, along with Wyatt Lewis and Stockton Short each made their Husky debut on Thursday night.
The Huskies will look to bounce back on Sunday, August 23 at Gonzaga at 7 p.m.
