Huskies Fall To 2015 National Champions
October 06, 2016 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE, WASH. --Β Washington's offense was unable to knock down the Cardinal defense at home Thursday night. After scoring 11 goals in the past five games, the No. 16 Huskies were held scoreless at the end of its matchup against Stanford with a final score of 1-0.
The Huskies are now 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Their conference win came in the Pac-12 opener when they shut out UCLA, 4-0.
"Statistically, I thought we deserved more out of this game," said Washington head coach Jamie Clark. "I knew it was likely that a set piece was going to be the deciding factor. While they got a third of the set pieces that we did, they unfortunately took advantage of the one important one. It was a great effort by our guys, but we have to bounce back Sunday."
Washington outshot the Cardinal 6-4 but was unable to find the back of the net, despite the aggressive offense effort. The Husky defense did not make it easy for their opponent, however, holding off the red and white striped jerseys until the 77th minute when Amir Bashti scored his first goal of the season.
The match consisted of high paced action from both teams, but it was Mason Robertson who took advantage of the most offensive opportunities. In his 53 minutes he took four shots.
The closest the Huskies got to scoring was off a free kick by Justin Schmidt. The ball found Robertson inside the box and he attempted the head the ball in, but the shot was blocked at the goal line.
Luke Hauswirth and Scott Menzies each tallied a shot in the match.
In between the pips was team captain, Auden Schilder. He recorded one save.
The team looks to improve to 2-2 in the conference on Sunday as they host California. The meet is set to kickoff at 4 p.m. PT and will be aired live on the Pac-12 Network.
