Huskies Hold Off Bears To Capture Win
October 09, 2016 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE, WASH. โ The pouring rain did not seem to faze the Dawgs Sunday night. Two goals were enough to hold back the Bears as the Huskies captured the win, 2-1.
"Great win by our guys tonight," said Washington head coach Jamie Clark. "We've talked about championships being won on Sunday's and tonight was a must win for us. We were pushed by Cal to the very last minute and that's the nature of Pac-12 play."
The Husky offense was explosive early on as the Dawgs recorded two back-to-back shots from Garret Jackson and Kyle Coffee. The shots were unable to make it past the Bears' defense.
Goalkeeper Auden Schilder prevented Cal from getting on the board early with a huge save that deflected the ball over the left corner of the net in the third minute. That save was one of three for the night.
The game's two goals came from two first time scorers this season- Luke Hauswirth and Quentin Pearson.
Hauswirth's goal came off a pass from Handwalla Bwana to Henry Wingo, who tapped it to Hauswirth in the ninth minute. Hauswirth, from the 18, bent it around to the far corner for a Husky goal.
The second goal, once again, came from a long pass from Bwana that was deflected off a Cal defender. Pearson slid in on the right side to slice the ball in the far left corner of the net in the 60th minute.ย
The Bears were able to net one ball in the 56th minute. Spencer Held was credited the goal.
The Huskies totaled for 13 shots on the night. Kyle Coffee led the offensive game with four.
Next week the Dawgs will hit the road for a matchup with the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis, Ore. The match is set to kick-off at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. The following week on Oct. 21, the Huskies will host Washington rival, Gonzaga for a 6 p.m. match.
