CORVALLIS, ORE. βThe University of Washington men's soccer team battled with Oregon State for over 100 minutes in the pouring rain Friday night. After a golden goal in the second overtime, the Dawgs took home the win, finishing 2-1.
"It was a big character test tonight for the guys," said Washington head coach Jamie Clark. "Somehow, someway certain teams come out on top, and this team is starting to find their way."
The first half of the match was dominated by Oregon State. In the 27th minute Oregon State's Don Tchilao made a solo run into Husky territory forcing goalkeeper Auden Schilder out of the box, where he took a shot and found the back of the net.
The Huskies tallied four shots in the first half. Corban Anderson, Kyle Coffee, Luke Hauswirth and Henry Wingo each took one shot in the first half.
The second half started off bright for the squad as Steven Wright converted a penalty kick after getting fouled by an Oregon State athlete in the 46th minute. Wright's second goal of the season tied the game at 1-1.
Later in the second half the Dawgs utilized their offense and were forceful in the box. They totaled for 16 shots in the match but were unable to convert one to take the lead.
After regulation expired, the teams went into overtime. Washington came out aggressive, controlling the ball early in the first overtime. Handwalla Bwana took a shot in the 91st minute that went wide.
Unable to find a scoring opportunity in the first overtime, the teams went into a second overtime. Mason Robertson was the hero, ending the match with a goal from Elijah Rice in the 101st minute.
Schilder had 1 save for the night.Β
Corban Anderson and Garret Jackson were each issued yellow cards in regulation.
Next week, the team returns home for a local match-up against Gonzaga next Friday. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. and will be available on live stream at GoHuskies.com.
