Washington Settles For 0-0 Draw At Penn
September 05, 2015 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – No. 7 Washington dominated Pennsylvania all night, but could not find a goal and settled for a 0-0 draw. The Dawgs had the majority of possession and chances, but their best efforts on goal were not to be. The draw puts the Huskies record at 2-0-1 on the season as they went out on the road for the first time.
The Huskies had no shortage of chances, taking 24 shots, including eight on goal. In the final moments of overtime, James Moberg appeared to have the winner, but his blast from just outside of the box took a touch off a defender to deflect just wide.
It was the story of the night as Washington had several close calls, but no goals.
The Dawgs dominated play in regulation, outshooting the Quakers, 19-2. Penn's goalkeeper, Max Polkinhorne made seven saves, including two in the final minutes when a pressing Washington offense had six corner kicks inside of five minutes.
The final two saves from that flurry came on headers on frame from Mason Robertson and Quentin Pearson. They were two of seven Huskies who had shots on target, including David Coly who had two. Coly had a near miss himself when his low shot forced a kick save by Polkinhorne.
For the game, Washington took 13 corners to just seven from Penn. The Dawgs had seemingly endless balls played into the box, but Penn's defense was able to hold strong.
On the defensive side, the Huskies picked up their third clean sheet in as many games. Washington is now at 290 consecutive scoreless minutes to open the year. Ryan Herman earned his third shutout of the season and 11th of his career in the process.
Washington will finish the roadtrip in Philadelphia on Monday at 4 p.m. when they face Drexel. The first game ever between the two schools will be available on webcast only.
