PHILADELPHIA – No. 7 Washington stayed unbeaten, defeating Drexel on the road, 1-0. The Dawgs earned yet another clean sheet, having now gone 380 scoreless minutes to start the season. The Huskies only goal came from a James Moberg penalty kick, but it was enough to improve their record to 3-0-1.
Auden Schilder made his collegiate debut for the Huskies and earned the shutout, making two saves. The redshirt sophomore stuck behind Spencer Richey and Ryan Herman in recent years impressed, picking up where Herman left off with another clean sheet.
The 380 scoreless minutes to start the season has been buoyed by a back four that has played almost every second. Justin Schmidt and Quentin Pearson at center back and Justin Fiddes and Luke Hauswirth at outside back once again did their jobs to keep the opponent off the board.
The Huskies got all the offense they needed in the 38th minute when Moberg connected from the penalty spot for the second time this season. The senior midfielder scored after freshman David Coly set up the penalty when he was taken down in the box.
Moberg became the first Husky two score a second goal on the season, while Coly again showed his dynamic ability in the attacking third by setting up the penalty.
Overall, the Dawgs were the more dangerous attack with 15 shots compared to just 11 for Drexel. Josh Heard ignited the Husky offense with three shots, all on goal, but the Drexel keeper was there for some of his seven saves. Heard had the game's first good chance setup by Michael Gallagher, but could not convert from a tough angle.
Moments later, Coly setup the game's only goal, which led to the Dawgs advantage at halftime.
The second half was more of the same as the Huskies were the more dangerous side, but did not have the finishing touch. Coly setup another chance early on in the half as Wingo connected on goal, but the save was made.
Wingo finished with three shots to tie Heard for the team lead, also putting all three on net.
The Dawgs will now return home and will have a light schedule this week. Washington hosts British Columbia for an exhibition game on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m., but will not return to action for real until the following weekend when they host Dartmouth and Harvard on Sept. 18 and Sept. 20.
