SEATTLE – After rising one spot in the rankings following an away match against Drexel, the No. 6 ranked Huskies add to their case of being one of the top teams in the country by defeating the University of British Columbia in an exhibition match on Friday night. Washington defeated UBC 1-0 in a match that had the intensity of a late season conference matchup.
The Huskies lone goal came in the 72nd minute from junior forward James Nosack. After a Garret Jackson header hit the post, the ball deflected back into play where Nosack was in perfect position to head the ball past the UBC goalie.
After the Washington goal, things started to heat up on the pitch; players from both sides amped up the intensity. A hard foul on midfielder Steven Wright led to an exchange of words and a small dose of pushing, which ultimately led to a booking of UBC's Gagan Dosanjh.
The match overall was a very good one. Both team were able to display flashes of attacks on goal and decent poise with the ball, but the UW was the only team to put one in the back of the net.
Kyle Coffee, who played all 90 minutes of Fridays match, led the Huskies in shots (4) and shots on goal (1). He features to be one of the Huskies key players this season after redshirting a year ago.
Washington has now gone 470 minutes without surrendering a goal to start the season. Both starting goalkeeper Ryan Herman and backup Auden Schilder saw playing time in the win.
Washington and UBC posted almost identical stats. Each team had 13 shots, four of which were on goal. They both also recorded eight fouls in the contest.
The Huskies next match is on Friday, September 18th when they face Dartmouth College for their third regular season home match.
