SEATTLE – It appeared as if it might be a night of frustration for No. 9 Washington as it controlled the run of play against Dartmouth, but gave up two set piece goals and trailed 2-0 at halftime. Give credit to the Huskies, however, as they battled back, scoring three times in the second half to remain unbeaten, defeating the Big Green, 3-2.
The star of the night was Husky freshman Quentin Pearson who came forward from his position at center back to score each of the first two goals. The top recruit from the Colorado Rapids Academy has already made a name for himself as a part of the defense that came into today having not allowed a goal.
Friday, it was Pearson's offensive exploits that helped bring the Dawgs back. Trailing by two goals at the half, Pearson got things started just 70 seconds after the break. Justin Schmidt sent in a perfect bending corner kick and Pearson was there at the back post to bury a header.
The Dawgs continued to push for the equalizer and it finally came in the 73rd minute. Again it was a corner kick, this time coming from the left side. Henry Wingo hit a ball near post that was headed across the goal by David Coly. Waiting on the back post was Schmidt who headed the ball on goal, but it was blocked by a Dartmouth defender. Waiting for the rebound has Pearson to score his second goal of the game, both coming with his head.
After tying things up, Washington didn't wait long to take the lead. The Dawgs used a counter-attack to get Coly loose on a breakaway and he was taken down by the Dartmouth goalkeeper in the box, setting up a penalty kick.
James Moberg took the PK and for the third time already this season, converted from the spot. The goal was the 10th of Moberg's Husky career and third game-winner of the season.
The finish was not without drama as Dartmouth created a couple chances, but the Husky defense held strong. Ryan Herman made a great reaction save in the final minutes to seal the win for the Dawgs.
Herman earned his third win of the season and improved to an incredible 19-2-4 in his Husky career. He made just the one save, but it was a big one at a crucial moment in the game.
For the match, Washington outshot the Big Green, 16-10, and had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. The game was physical with 37 total fouls and five yellow cards.
Dartmouth scored their goals in the fifth and 45th minutes, both on set pieces. The first was a long throw into the box that was not cleared and found an open Dartmouth striker. The goal just before half was a corner kick to a one-touch goal that left Herman with no chance.
The Big Green goals were against the run of play and the Huskies stunned, making their second-half comeback all the more impressive.
The Dawgs improved to 4-0-1 on the season and will look to stay unbeaten on Sunday when they host Harvard at noon. The game will also be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
