Huskies Fall 4-2 In 10 Innings To Beavers
May 01, 2015 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Oregon State capitalized on a pair of Husky errors, including one in the 10th inning, to take the first game of the series, 4-2, Thursday night at Husky Ballpark.
The Beavers (28-13, 11-8 Pac-12) scored a pair of runs in the 10th on a two-run single by right fielder Elliott Cary to send the Huskies to their season-high tying fourth-straight loss of the season.
After Troy Rallings gave up a lead-off single to Logan Ice, Jeff Hendrix laid down a sacrifice bunt to third base. Alex Schmidt came up with the ball cleanly, but he threw it into the runner and down the first base line allowing both runners to reach safely and move into scoring position. Eventually both runners came around to score on a one-out, bases loaded single up the middle by Cary.
The Huskies (23-20, 8-14) had a chance to make it interesting in the 10th when Schmidt started the inning off with a double, but Oregon State closer Mitch Hickey struck out the next three batters for his seventh save.
Both starters had nice outings, but were out of the game by the time it was decided.
Husky starter Noah Bremer tied a career high with six strikeouts in five-plus innings of work. He encountered multiple jams, but escaped unscathed when the defense turned three double plays behind him. He finally reached the end of the line in the sixth inning after he loaded the bases with one out, but he escaped unblemished after reliever Spencer Jones got a strikeout and ground out to get out of the jam.
The game remained scoreless until the seventh when the Beavers scored two unearned runs. With the bases loaded, Hendrix hit a ground ball to Schmidt at third. The UW senior threw wide of first baseman Branden Berry allowing two runs to score on the play.
Washington tied the game back up in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homer by designated hitter Austin Rei. Jack Meggs led off with a 12-pitch walk off OSU starter Andrew Moore, who had been cruising along relatively trouble free. Rei followed by hitting a 2-0 pitch from Moore just fair down the left-field line for his third homer of the season.
Rei's homer was just the Huskies second hit of the evening. The Husky offense only managed four hits off of four Beavers pitchers.
Sam Tweedt (6-0) recorded one out in the ninth inning, but it was good enough to pick up the win.
The two teams meet again on Friday, with a 7:00 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
