Dawgs Mount Big Rally To Beat Beavers, 8-6
May 02, 2015 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Washington fell behind 5-0 in the first inning to Oregon State, but scored five runs of its own in the fifth to rally for an 8-6 victory Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
Austin Rei homered twice and Husky starter Tyler Davis overcame a rocky start to help the Huskies (24-20, 9-14 Pac-12) snap a four-game losing streak and even the series against the Beavers (28-14, 11-9) at one game apiece.
The Beavers jumped all over Davis in the first inning for five runs in front of a season-high crowd of 1,522. Jeff Hendrix doubled in a run and Michael Howard singled in another with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. Catcher Logan Ice followed Howard with the big blow, a three-run homer on a 2-2 pitch that bounced off the top of the wall and over the fence.
After a 37 pitch inning for Davis, it didn't look like he would make it very far in the game. But the senior All-American candidate settled down after the first and gave the Huskies 7 1/3 strong innings. He struck out six, walked two, allowed eight hits and let just one more unearned run cross the plate in snapping a personal three-game losing streak.
The win improved Davis to 6-5 on the season and gave him his 21st career victory, seventh most in team history.
With the early deficit, the offense picked up Davis, nibbling its way back into the game.
Washington got two back in the bottom half of the first, thanks to two-run homer by Rei. After Jack Meggs singled, Rei took a 1-1 pitch from OSU starter Drew Rasmussen into the visitor's bullpen for his fourth home run of the season.
Rei's hit continued his streak of reaching base safely in every game he has played – 15 total.
The Beavers added an unearned run in the third to make it 6-2 and it stayed that way until the Husky half of the fifth inning. Washington sent eight runners to the plate and scored five runs to take the 7-6 lead.
Rei hit a three-run homer, his third in two days and fifth of the season, to make it 6-5 OSU.
Freshman Nyles Nygaard, making his fourth start of the season, gave the Huskies their first lead of the game later in the inning with a two-run single of eventual losing pitcher Sam Tweedt (6-1). Nygaard's hit – just his fifth of the year – drove in runs two and three of his young career.
Washington made it a two-run cushion in the sixth. Branden Berry hit a clutch two-out single that scored Braden Bishop and made the score 8-6.
Meanwhile, Davis was cruising along until the eighth when with one out, his 140th pitch of the game went wide to walk Howard and put two runners on base. He handed the ball over to Spencer Jones, who promptly got a 463 inning-ending double play.
Troy Rallings struck out the first two batters of the ninth and got a fly out to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
The Huskies pounded out 14 hits, their second most in Pac-12 play.
Rei ended the night 3 for 5 with 5 RBI. Meggs, Berry, Alex Schmidt and Joey Morgan each had two hits.
The two teams will decide the series Saturday, with 7:30 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks) scheduled for the first pitch. The game is sold out with Little Leaguers and students let in to the game on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached.
