Huskies Shutout 3-0 By WSU In Non-Conference Battle
April 28, 2015 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The Huskies managed only three hits off four Washington State pitchers at Husky Ballpark Monday and were shutout 3-0 by the visiting Cougars in a non-conference game.
Ryan Walker, Layne Bruner, Sean Hartnett and Ian Hamilton combined to strike out 14 Huskies in leading the Cougars (24-19) to their third win in four tries over Washington (23-19).
Washington loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth, but Hamilton struck out the next three batters to end the game and earn his 10th save of the year.
The Washington pitching duo of Ryan Schmitten and Spencer Jones were impressive in their own right, combining to strikeout 12 Cougars. But unlike their counterparts in the other dugout, they could not keep the other team off the scoreboard.
Husky starting pitcher Ryan Schmitten had a fine outing, working six complete. But when he was lifted in favor of Spencer Jones after a lead-off walk to Ian Sagdal in the seventh inning, he was trailing 1-0.
The junior from Puyallup struck out a career-high seven batters and scattered three hits and walked two. Sagdal eventually came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Shane Matheny, to close the book on Schmitten (1-1) who allowed two earned runs.
Washington State added another run when Matheny advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third and came around to score on an infield single by P.J. Jones to make the score 3-0.
The Cougars scored their first run in the third. After a walk and ground-rule double by Shea Donlin, Jack Strunc grounded into a fielder's choice to score Jones.
Washington's Jones threw the final three innings striking out five and allowing three hits – all in the seventh.
Bruner (2-0) was credited with the win for WSU.
Alex Schmidt was 2 for 3 and Austin Rei was 1 for 4 to account for Washington's hits.
Washington has a short week before returning to action. They host Oregon State for three games, starting Thursday and running through Saturday. All three games will be telecast on the Pac-12 networks.
