SEATTLE – Washington made it a weekend sweep, knocking off Oregon 70-55 on Sunday evening at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Dawgs (18-6, 7-5 Pac-12) outlasted the Ducks (11-12, 4-8), matching every run with a better one of their own.
Kelsey Plum scored 20 points to lead three Dawgs in double figures, but it was the Husky defense that excelled. Washington held Oregon to just 38 percent shooting and forced 13 turnovers. The win also improved Washington to 9-1 at home this season.
Oregon led early, but the Dawgs used a 12-0 run to take control of the game. Trailing 8-5, the Huskies would hold the Ducks scoreless for 6:29, while Plum scored seven of Washington's 12 points. Oregon would slowly chip away at the lead and pull within one at the 4:33 mark, but the Dawgs would pull away from there.
Brianna Ruiz got all the way to the basket with a right-handed drive to start the scoring as the Dawgs reeled off a 7-0 run that included a 3-point play from Jazmine Davis. The Dawgs led 39-28 at the break as Plum led Washington with 12 points. The Huskies shot 45.5 percent for the half, including making four 3-pointers.
After the break, the Huskies extended the lead as Davis scored eight-straight points as Plum had to sit with foul trouble. The Ducks would make one final run, scoring seven-straight to pull within four, but would get no closer. Talia Walton had a 3-point play to start an 8-0 run to effectively put the game away.
Davis finished with 15 points, while Walton had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Aminah Williams chipped in nine points and eight rebounds as the Huskies kept it close on the glass despite going up against the nation's second-leading rebounder in Oregon's Jillian Alleyne.
Washington shot 41.3 percent for the game and made six 3-pointers. The Dawgs also continued their efficiency from the foul line, making 12-14, compared to just 6-13 for the Ducks. The Dawgs also committed only six turnovers, while turning 13 Oregon turnovers in 12 points.
The weekend sweep puts Washington in great position with six conference games left to go. The Dawgs travel to the Rocky Mountains next weekend to face Utah on Friday at 6 p.m. and Colorado on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, for the first time the NCAA selection committee will announce the top-20 teams as of now heading into the NCAA Tournament. The Dawgs entered Sunday with a RPI of 15 and are very much in the mix to be selected.
