USTA/ITA Regional Championship Comes To Close
October 27, 2015 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The Washington men's tennis team finished up play today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center where they played host to the Northwest USTA/ITA Regional Championships this past weekend.
Two Huskies remained today but only one could move on. Gal Hakak and Mitch Stewart matched up against each other in today's semifinal game, with Stewart advancing 7-5, 6-2. Stewart than took to the court again at 1:30 p.m. to face David Wilczynski of Stanford, but fell in a tough three set match 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
“It was an incredible day to finish this event,” said head coach Matt Anger. "It was tough having our guys play each other in the semifinals as that is always awkward. Mitch got the opportunity to play in the final and he and David Wilczynski put on a show. Mitch played super tennis and we have to hand it to David, he played well throughout the tournament and should do well in New York. Mitch will recover quickly as he played his heart out and is continuing to improve.”
The Dawgs come out of an impressive overall showing this weekend, representing a quarter of the field in the round of 16 for singles, with Jake Douglas, Hakak, Enzo Sommer and Mitch Stewart all advancing. Douglas fell in the quarterfinals to No. 67 Daan Maasland of Oregon in a tough three set match 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, while Sommer fell to No. 36 Florian Lakat of California 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles play the duo of Rishabh Raman and Sommer made it the furthest, winning two matches before falling to Miguel Diaz and Sem Verbeek of Pacific 8-4 on Saturday.
The Huskies next event will be the Jack Kramer Invitational in Palos Verdes, Calif., where they'll be November 13th through the 15th. Keep up to date with the Dawgs during tournament season this fall on Facebook or on Twitter @UW_MTennis.
