SEATTLE – Just a few hours after setting the Pac-12 record for career Player of the Week awards, Husky senior Krista Vansant added another big piece of hardware to her display case, as she was named the 2014 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Over the past two seasons, Vansant has led the Huskies to a combined 59-5 record including 36-4 in the past forty Pac-12 matches, while sporting a cumulative grade point average of 3.30.
The Huskies are the top seed in the Seattle Region (No. 3 overall) heading into the NCAA Championships this week, where they will host New Hampshire in the first round on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Alaska Airlines Arena. Vansant has been the offensive leader for the Dawgs all four years of her career, and currently ranks ninth in the NCAA in points per set at 5.30. Her 1,840 kills rank second in UW history, and her 1,096 digs rank ninth.
The native of Redlands, Calif. is majoring in sociology, and was a Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention each of the past two years, as well as a First Team Academic All-District selection this year. She has also been named the 2013 AVCA National Player of the Year, 2013 Pac-12 Player of the Year, and 2013 Honda Award winner.
Vansant is just the second Husky to win Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, joining Jill Collymore, who won the honor in 2009.
In order to be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, student-athletes must be a senior (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50% of the scheduled contests in the sport and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. The winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport's regular season. The athletic accomplishments of the nominees are a consideration in the voting for the award.
