PORTLAND, Ore. - At their home away from home, the UW women's soccer team earned a huge 2-1 victory in double overtime vs. New Mexico at Merlo Field in Portland, Ore., Sunday afternoon.
UW improves to 2-3-2 on the year with the win while UNM falls to 3-3-2.
With the win and Portland's 2-1 victory over Oregon State in overtime today, the Pilots and Huskies tied for the Portland/Nike Invitational championship with records of 1-0-1. Husky goalkeeper Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) was named the tournament's Defensive MVP while Danielle Foxhoven from the Pilots was the Offensive MVP.
"We tried to prepare and rejuvenate between Friday's 10-player overtime match as best as we could," said head coach Lesle Gallimore. "This was a bittersweet game for us. Clearly the result is positive for us and most importantly we showed grit, guts and determination over two matches that would make any coach proud."
The match was pretty even between the two teams as shots were 19-13 UNM and 6-5 on goal for the Lobos. LaFontaine-Kussmann made five saves in the game. She allowed just one goal in the 83rd minute to the top right corner 16 yards out. Madisyn Olguin scored the go-ahead goal for the Lobos and Jennifer Williams had the assists.
Junior Sarah Martinez (Des Moines, Wash.) evened the match to send it to overtime with a goal in the 89th minute. It was unassisted from a loose ball off the corner six yards out. Martinez led the Huskies with three shots in the game.
"Sarah Martinez who has battled a lot of physical adversity as of late came in and did what need to be done today," Gallimore said.
In the final minute of double overtime, sophomore Hillary Zevenbergen (Woodway, Wash.) scored her second career goal to win the game for UW. She was assisted by Martinez, beat two defenders and struck the ball to the lower left corner.
"We had outstanding play over two games from (Kate) Deines, (Lindsay) Elston, (Stine) Schoening and Jorde," Gallimore added. "I would add that (Kelli) Stewart, Zevenbergen and (Alex) Webber upped their contributions significantly."
The UW women play just one game next week, traveling to Spokane, Wash., to face Gonzaga on Sept. 18.
