SEATTLE - B.K. Santy singled home Chase Anselment in the 10th inning to give Washington (7-15) a 5-4 extra-inning win over Portland (10-11) at rainy Husky Ballpark on Tuesday.
Anselment lead off the 10th inning with a double off Portland closer Chris Dennis (0-1) and advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out. Dennis intentionally walked Brendan Gardner-Young, setting the table for Santy's clutch hit.
Santy hit a hard grounder up the middle that was stopped by Portland shortstop Matt Mardesich, but he was unable to get the ball out of his glove and make a play. Anselment scored easily and the Huskies went into a wild celebration of their season-high third-straight win.
Adam Cimber (1-0) struck out the side in the 10th inning to pick up his first win of the season.
Cimber and Tyler Kane combined to retire 13 of 14 batters faced in relief of starter Austin Voth.
The Pilots jumped on Voth out of the gate with four runs in the first inning but did not score the rest of the way. Mardesich followed an RBI single by Turner Gill with a towering three-run blast to left field that got caught in the wind and sailed out of reach from Husky leftfielder Joe Meggs' glove.
Voth settled down after the first inning, allowing just two hits over the next five innings and holding Portland off the scoreboard, but the Washington offense was held in check by Portland starter Chris Johnson - who allowed two harmless singles through five innings.
The Huskies were finally able to touch Johnson in the sixth inning for two runs, but could have had more. Meggs led off the inning with a single, followed by a hustling double to left-center by Jacob Lamb that moved Meggs to third. Troy Scott followed with a single that a diving Craig Smith in centerfield could not snag, plating two runs for the Huskies. Scott advanced to second and then third on consecutive wild pitches with Caleb Brown at bat. Brown struck out swinging but was safe at first on the third wild pitch of the inning by Johnson. Scott was unable to score on the play and Johnson was lifted from the game with runners on first and third and nobody out.
Keeler Brynteson came on in relief and was able to strike out Eric Peterson before the Husky rally was squelched on a strange double play. Pinch hitter Will Sparks hit a chopper to third base and Brown was forced out on a close play in which Portland second baseman Riley Henricks was upended. Sparks was ruled out at first on interference by Brown, which nullified a potential run by Scott.
The Huskies were able to draw even in the seventh on a two-run single by Lamb. Santy and Ty Afenir reached on back-to-back singles to start the inning, were advanced on a sacrifice by Spencer Rogers and scored on Lamb's bases-loaded one-out hit.
The Huskies open the Pac-10 schedule this weekend when they travel to face No. 24 UCLA in a three-game series.
