No. 24 Bruins Out-Duel Huskies, 2-1, In UW's Pac-10 Opener

LOS ANGELES - Washington's Aaron West and UCLA's Gerrit Cole matched up in a taut pitchers' duel Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium in the Huskies' first Pac-10 game of the season, but the 24th-ranked Bruins emerged on top by a 2-1 score.
The Huskies (7-16 overall, 0-1 in the Pac-10) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end, and played in their fifth straight one-run game. UCLA, which opened Pac-10 play last weekend with two wins and a loss over USC, improved to 12-9 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Cole (3-2), the New York Yankees' first-round draft pick in the 2008 draft, went the distance for the victory, allowing the one run on five hits and two walks, striking out 10.
West (0-5), who suffered a 2-1 loss last weekend to Nevada despite allowing only one earned run in a complete game, was solid again vs. UCLA. He worked six and one-third innings, allowing only two runs on seven hits.
Neither team was able to break onto the scoreboard in the first five innings.
But, after getting runners to second and third with one out and failing to score in the fifth, the Bruins finally scored the game's first run in the sixth. Beau Amaral led off the inning by drawing a walk. After he moved up on sacrifice bunt, he came in to score on a single from Cody Regis. After another single, West got a double-play groundout to end the inning with the Bruins leading by a 1-0 score.
In the seventh, after one out, West hit two batters before being relieved. Geoff Brown came on and got a strikeout and then walked Amaral to load the bases. Brown was replaced by Jeff Brigham, who got a strikeout to end the inning, but not before a wild pitch allowed Steve Rodriguez to score from third.
Washington, which hadn't had a base runner reach third in the first seven innings, finally broke through for its first run in the eighth. Catcher B.K. Santy led off the inning with a double to right. After moving to third on a Spencer Rogers groundout, he scored on a ground ball to first from DH Brian Wolfe.
Center fielder Caleb Brown was the only Husky with more than one hit, finishing 2-for-3. Cody Keefer led UCLA's hitters with three hits, including a double, in four at bats.
The Huskies and Bruins continue the series Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. before wrapping it up on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
