SAN DIEGO - Brent Richards scored twice but in the end the No. 22 San Diego Aztecs (7-2-1, 1-1-0) came out on top of the No. 23 UW men's soccer team (6-3-1, 0-2-0) at the San Diego Sports Deck on Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-3 in overtime.
The Aztecs struck first in the second minute as Khadim Diouf scored off of a rebound. The assists came from Daniel Steres and Jose Altamirano.
Richards, a junior from Camas, Wash., tied the match in the sixth minute on a header off of a cross by senior Daniel Gray (Tacoma, Wash.). It was the second assist of the season for Gray and the fifth goal for Richards.
Just two minutes later, SDSU re-took the lead at 2-1 as Diouf and Altamirano teamed up for their second goal of the game. This one was 18 yards out to the far right post.
Richards scored his sixth goal of the season in the 36th minute as the Dawgs tied the game at the half. The assist came from senior Taylor Mueller (Sammamish, Wash.), his first of the season.
The second half was scoreless until the 65th minute as SDSU got its third goal off of a corner kick. The ball deflected in the goal off of a UW defender.
Just a minute later, a yellow card was given out in the box to SDSU and the Huskies earned a penalty kick. Sophomore Dylan Tucker-Gangnes (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) took the kick and tied the game at three in what was his first goal of the season.
The Aztecs took the game in the second minute of overtime as Steres headed it in on an assist by Gemechu Abraham.
Washington took 11 shots in the game, six on goal, led by Richards with three.
Senior Stephen Fung (Honolulu, Hawai'i) made two saves in goal. His record is now 4-2-1. Brad Byrns got the win in goal for SDSU, making three saves.
Washington took nine corner kicks to just two by SDSU.
"It was a big disappointment for us today," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "After posting three shutouts last weekend we gave up four goals today. It was very uncharacteristic of our team. There was a bright side that we came back three times and headed into overtime with a man advantage. Brent was very good for us to score twice. We just need to take care of it for next week and get into the win column in the conference."
The Huskies return home to host Stanford on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and California on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Pac-10 play.
