SEATTLE - Senior Matt Van Houten scored twice in the second half as the UW men's soccer team picked up its first Pac-10 win of the season, 2-0 over Stanford at Husky Soccer Stadium Friday night.
The Huskies (7-3-1, 1-2-0) and the Cardinal (4-6-0, 0-2-0) went scoreless in the first half. UW took 11 shots in the first half compared to just one for Stanford. In the game, UW took 17 total shots to just four for Stanford.
Just a minute into the second half, Van Houten (Portland, Ore.) scored his second goal of the season right in front of the goal on an assist by freshman Zach Portillos (Aurora, Colo.)
Van Houten would strike again just two minutes later in the 48th minute. Senior Brad Keller (Scottsdale, Ariz.) sent the ball in on the left side and Van Houten moved past the Cardinal goalkeeper and tapped it in.
"Overall it was a great night for us," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "We needed a boost coming off of the road and we got it tonight. We played well in the first half but the shots we had weren't on target so we asked for a bit more quality in the front and the forwards took heart. The passes into them and a fast spell by us to start the second half decided the game. We carried on and kept shooting and we played well tonight and deserved to win."
Freshman Spencer Richey (Seattle, Wash.) got the win in goal, making three saves. He improves to 3-1-0. Galen Perkins is now (0-1-0) for the Cardinal in goal.
The Husky soccer teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday as the women take on No. 25 Arizona State at 11:30 a.m. and the men face No. 14 Cal at 2 p.m.
