Head Coach Tia Jackson
General Statement: "You got two games for the price of one. In the first half, we were one team and in the second half, we were a different team. But I give credit to Stanford too, they're a very solid team. They came out and attacked us early. They shot us out of the zone we were in. For the most part, I thought our kids put together a phenomenal first half. The goal towards the end of the game - I remember looking up at the clock and there were three minutes left - we wanted to end on a good note. We wanted to win those last three minutes. We won it seven to four. We have some things we can build on but we have to make sure we put two halves together. I probably sound like a broken record because that's happened quite a bit this year. That's indicative of a young team."
On the team's growth: "We played the number seven team in the country to two points in the first half. That's phenomenal growth. The last time we played them, we scored twelve points in the first half. It was an entirely different game. Fourteen games later, it's a different game."
On the first half: "We attacked them defensively. We wanted to take Candice out of the equation so we did a bit of a box and one. When we ended up not being in that box and one, that's when she got hot. So we had to end up going back into it. But in order to get into it we had to score some baskets. I think for the most part we knew they were going to be chasing us off screens, our guards were able to catch and shoot. Post players were rebounding like monsters. To out-rebound this team is awesome. That did not happen at their place. They ended up killing us in the first half and then we end up tying it up for the game in the second half. Like I said there's a lot of growth to take from this but in the first half we were just inside out. Had our post players attacking their post players down on the block. They're very good shot blockers so we wanted to face them up in a tackle. Every post player did that, it was pretty awesome to watch."
On chasing Candice around: No it wasn't too bad, you just have to face her and stay with her. Honestly it's a lot easier than being in the natural box part.
On the attitude at halftime: We needed go at their posts hard.
On what changed in the 2nd half: We just were not hitting our shots, our shooting percentage went way down in the 2nd half. We got rushed, we needed to slow down and run our offense which we didn't do in the 2nd half. We also lost intensity on defense in the 2nd half and we didn't come out as strong as we did in the 1st half.
On playing well in the 1st half: We knew it was going to be a close game. We thought we did well in the first half but we just didn't come out in the 2nd half and do as well as we wanted to.
On recovering from the 12-0 run in the 2nd half by Stanford: Yeah, they're one of the top teams in the country and you can't get down against a team like that, they won't let you come back.
On the Attitude at Halftime: Just to keep it going and play a full 40 minutes. We needed to run on them, they were only play 6-7 players so we needed to get them tired and we needed to get their posts in foul trouble.
On playing well in the 1st half: No, we know we can play with them. We weren't surprised.
On anything knew defensively in the 2nd half: No, they just rebounded better in the 2nd half than in the 1st.
On being more disappointed than Coach: It never feels good to lose, it's a tough loss when you're so close at halftime.
On one more shot with a home game: Cal is similar to Stanford in what they run so it's a good test for us. We're going to come out on Sunday fired up. We know what it's like to play against Stanford so we'll come out ready.
