Today's game with Gonzaga marked the 2008-09 season opener for the Huskies.
Washington is now 22-13 all-time in season openers and 28-7 when opening the regular season at home. The Huskies have now lost their last three season openers - 88-61 at Kansas State last year and 78-61 at Marquette in 2006-07.
With Sunday's loss, the Huskies fall to 17-2 all-time against the Zags (10-1 at home), with their first loss in the series coming last season at Gonzaga (72-91).
Junior forward/center Laura McLellan set a career-high with 16 points. Her previous high of 14 points came against Arizona State on March 8, 2008. McLellan's eight rebounds were two shy of her career-high of 10 set at Boise State, Dec. 7, 2007.
Senior forward Heidi McNeill's grabbed a career-high 9 rebounds. Her previous high of 7 was set twice, most recently vs. Idaho, Nov. 23, 2007.
UW's largest lead of the first half was 10 points (17-7) at 12:03. With a 7-5 lead at 15:41 in the opening frame, the Huskies went on a 10-0 run with 5 straight points from junior guard Sami Whitcomb in that span. Whitcomb hit a pair of free-throws and a three-pointer in the run, while senior forward Heidi McNeill and freshman guard Kristi Kingma added 2 and 3 points, respectively.
Gonzaga never led in the first half and the Huskies held the Bulldogs to a 23.3% shooting percentage (10-43) before the break.
With the Huskies leading 46-43 with 7:02 remaining in the second half, Gonzaga mounted a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to go up 50-46 with 3:54 remaining and would not relinquish the lead after that point.
Gonzaga junior forward Vivian Frieson swiped a career-high 10 steals.
Freshman guard Kristi Kingma and sophomore guard Sara Morton made their first career starts today.
