Washington Head Coach Tia Jackson
Opening Statement: "We knew that coming into this game that this was Corban College's first game and they were going to come out and treat it as if it was their championship game, and they came out pretty fired up, but it definitely ended on a fiery note. As far as us, we went in with a great game plan. The kids executed pretty well knowing that it was not going to be about the opponent it was about going out and executing our plan and I feel that for the most part we went out and did the things that were necessary."
On the condition of Junior Forward Lydia Young: "She is nursing a knee injury. I am not quite sure what it is. You saw that she had a knee sleeve on so right now we are just trying to figure out when she will be able to go."
On what was not up to standard: "Besides the evident fouling, allowing lay-ups, not taking charges when we were in position, and turning the ball over. We had 20 turnovers and that is definitely not what we want; they were not forced turnovers that team did not press us we were just getting a little too excited and making unforced errors with the basketball."
On the flexibility of the lineup with the play of Mackenzie Argens and the return of Young : "That is a great question. I think that Mackenzie has been playing well. She is getting closer to 100% by the day and she is proving that she should at least be out on the floor now whether that is in a starting position that is up to Mackenzie."
On the performance of Freshman Guard Kristi Kingma: "I thought she did what we have been keeping a secret in practice because nobody sees her but us. Tonight everybody saw what she is capable of doing. I think that last game everybody but Heidi [McNeill] and Mackenzie [Argens] was a little nervous but I think now she is starting to get into a rhythm and the rest of them are starting to get into a rhythm. I think some things that are being missed here are that some of these girls don't understand how it works in college. In High School you get out of school at three o'clock and you do not do anything until game time but in college you get out of class come in for shoot around and then pre-game meal with the team. So I think it is just a little different of an itinerary for them and they are just starting to get acclimated to that."
On recruiting multi-sport athletes and the excitement: "I think that they get excited too. I mean Kristi was excited to just be able to focus on basketball. We had a conversation in the spring and I remember Kristi telling me that she could not wait to just be able to focus on basketball. So now that she is able to do that you have not even seen the best of her."
Freshman Kristi Kingma
On pre-game jitters: "The last game I played in was during high school and that was in March, so that was a while ago. I think I was over-excited for the first game, wanting to be a Husky my whole life and coming out here I was just so anxious. I got settled into practice this week and settled down, I think that was mainly it."
On scoring 20 points: "I just want to go out and do whatever I need to get a win. I felt like tonight my shot was on so in that case I'm going to shoot. In the first game my shot obviously wasn't on and I tried to find other ways so we could get a win whether it's defensive tenacity or rebounding. As Coach J was saying, I'm a scorer and Sami is too and that's our job out there. She wants us to be scorers so I'm going to try to have that mindset going into every game and just go from there."
Freshman Mackenzie Argens
On injured knee: "It's feeling good. There are times were it's a little sore but it's getting better. I feel like I'm back. I was out for a pretty long time and it was nice because I saw a different view of basketball. There are still a few things I need to get over mentally but I feel like I'm pretty close to 100 percent."
On second half steal: "In high school I really liked to push the ball up and I guess I've been watching the guards just a little bit too much. I just kind of went with the flow."
Junior Sami Whitcomb
On what the team got out of the game: "Coach J talked a lot about not playing the opponent as much as just playing our game so I think that that was big for us because it helped us what we should be focusing on as a team going into Gonzaga and our season. I think we can take away a lot of things like taking care of the ball and making the right choices with shooting."
