Washington Head Coach Tia Jackson
General Statement:
"We won. It was kind of a struggle to start the game with them going on a run and then us going on a run and keeping the game close. There were five lead changes? For us, it was about what we were going to do to stop them from going on those runs. So we went to a box and one. Rheya Neabors was kicking our buts so we had to take her out of the equation. And that's what we did and we benefited from it."On turning 26 turnovers into 31 points: "We wanted to run, and those turnovers are opportunities for us to run. It's much easier to run when you have numbers to start off of a turnover than getting a rebound and they know they're shot's going up and trying to get back set in their defense. We wanted to run on them. It says we had four fast break points. I know doggone well we had more than four. We probably had four in the first five minutes of the game. I know that's not indicative of what was really shown out there. Transition offense is huge for us because we know we are a good running team. We knew that we wanted to come in and out-rebound them....We were consciously aware of where number 32 was at all times and we kept her out of the equation."
On Jess McCormack's influence in the game: "It was huge. Jess is always a target for us. You saw her, she's a monstrous rebounder. She gets her hand on them, she snatches them and brings them in. Not only that, she's a great target inside, a great finisher. That's her role. She knows she's a low-post presence and we want to get the ball to her there. When you've got Dre and her inside, it's tough to mess with us."
"I went into the game saying that I was only going to play her in two minute spurts...She hasn't played. When you put a kid in who's had a concussion and they take their first hit they're back to their old selves with the concussion. So I was not going to play her for more than two minutes at a time. But then I'm also a fan of not reinventing the wheel. She was killing, so I said `Well, I've got to play her.' She was fine and she played like it."
On using different guards: "Every game is like that. Morty was having a good game to end the half so I'm going to go with that lineup to start the second half. I didn't want to break it. We were in a good rhythm. They stayed in that rhythm, but when they got tired I had to make substitutions. Michelle was consistently playing through that tiredness. I had to find a way to get her back in."
On Washington's offense: "Three things we always want to do. We want to focus defensively, we want to transition offensively and we want to win the rebounding war. Those are things that we control."
On today as the mid-point of the Pac-10 schedule: "I definitely thought we'd definitely be in a different place as far as our record in the Pac-10. But when you think about where we started, we were losing games by 20, 25, 30. Now we're in contention to win those games. We're going against teams who are top 25 teams. It just makes us better and we're getting better every game. That gap is closing and closing and closing. We face Washington State next Sunday. It's not going to be an easy task. It's a rival. I'm going to coach it as if it's a huge, huge rival, which is what it is. It's another huge game for us. We can't take anyone lightly."
Freshman Katelan Redmon
On having a better game than Thursday:
"I think I was taking better shots this game compared to the last couple of games. I was more open on the shots and not forcing it as much. They definitely weren't as physical with me. With ASU, they way more physical and I think in this game they backed off a little and made it easier to get open. It helped that I hit my first shot. That gives me more confidence for the rest of the game."On where the team stands at the midpoint of conference play: "We're coming together. We're really starting to contend in a lot of these games. We're not being blown out by 20. We're fighting and we just need to keep doing that for the rest of the Pac-10 games."
On having Jess McCormack back: "It gives us a lot more inside presence. It puts me out on the wing so I'm not struggling on the inside. Having two big posts in there really changes the look of the game."
Freshman Jess McCormack
On coming back from injury:
"I felt really good out there. No headaches or dizziness, it just felt great out there."On why she didn't play Thursday: "I went back in and my head wasn't quite right. I think those few extra days helped out a lot. I was just dizzy and I couldn't quite see."
