The Huskies' 69-59 win over Arkansas State in the Husky Classic championship game earns them their 14th title - and third straight - in the 21-year history of the tournament. Washington improved its all-time record in the Husky Classic to 35-7, 14-7 when playing for the championship.
Sophomore guard Sami Whitcomb matched her career high by scoring 16 points in the first half alone, with 12 of those points coming off threes. Whitcomb ended the game with a career high 19 points on 5-12 shooting, 5-9 from behind the arc. She had scored a previous high of 16 twice, the last time coming in the opening round game vs. Idaho. Whitcomb also swiped a career high 6 steals, eclipsing her previous high of 3, last set against Gonzaga (11/27/07).
After holding a slim 20-19 lead with 9:32 remaining in the first half, Washington ended the half on a on a 22-4 run, sparked in part by a three point foul shot opportunity for Emily Florence coming out of a media timeout. . The Huskies extended their streak of non-conference home wins to 13 straight games. The last non-conference home loss for UW was Dec. 21, 2004 versus Colorado in overtime (74-76).
Sophomore guard Sara Mosiman scored a career high 10 points on 3-5 shooting. Her previous high of 6 points was set vs. Northern Arizona on 11/17/07.
Sophomore forward Laura McLellan scored a career high 10 points, and was just one rebound shy of a double-double. Her previous high of 8 points was set vs. Hawaii on 11/16/07.
Senior guard Emily Florence was one rebound shy of a double-double and led the team in rebounding for the second time this season.
Five of the eight Huskies that stepped on the floor scored in double-figures.
Weber State (2-3) defeated Idaho (0-5), 56-48 in the Husky Classic consolation game. Sara Tuomi of Weber State led all scorers with 24 points.
