The Huskies' 73-57 win over Idaho in the first round of the Husky Classic puts them in the championship game for the 21st time in the 21-year history of the tournament. Washington improved its all-time record in the Husky Classic to 34-7, 21-0 in the first round.
With the win over Idaho, Washington improves to 28-6 overall in home openers and have won the last seven straight. UW's last loss in a home opener was Nov. 24, 2000, to Connecticut (54-100). The last non-conference home loss for UW was Dec. 21, 2004 versus Colorado in overtime (74-76).
Washington will face Arkansas State in the championship game, Sunday, at 2 p.m. Arkansas State (4-1) defeated Weber State (1-3), 57-44 in the earlier first round game. Guard Angie Criner led Arkansas State with 19 points on 6-11 shooting, and Ahkiah Hunter of Weber State had a game-high 20 points.
Idaho will face Weber State in the consolation game, Sunday, at 12:00 p.m.
Five different Huskies either met or exceeded their career-highs in at least one category in Friday's victory over Idaho.
Sami Whitcomb tied her career-high with 16 points on 6-11 shooting. She set her career high earlier this year with a 16 point performance against Gonzaga (11/12/07).
Freshman center Kali Bennett recorded a double-double, with a career-high 18 points, including 14 in the second half, to go along with a career-high 11 rebounds.
Freshman Katelan Redmon and Kali Bennett led four UW players in double-digits with a game-high 18 points a piece. Redmon has scored in double-figures in each of the last three contests and four times overall.
Junior forward Heidi McNeill scored a career high 10 points and tied a career high by grabbing 7 rebounds. McNeill recorded her previous high of 9 points against Gonzaga on 11/12/07.
Washington took advantage of 15 offensive rebounds to score a total of 18 points on second-chance attempts.
