SPOKANE, Wash. - Forward Heather Bowman scored a game-high 21 points, including 16 in the second-half, to lead Gonzaga to its first-ever victory over Washington in the all-time women's basketball series between these two teams at the McArthey Center, Monday evening.
UW suffered its second-straight loss to fall to 0-2, while Gonzaga won their season-opener. Like they did at Kansas State Saturday, the Huskies got out to another slow start, giving up 55 first-half points to the Zags. UW turned around to outscore Gonzaga 39-36 in the second-half, but it was too little too late for the Huskies who are still searching for their first win for first-year head coach Tia Jackson.
UW led the all-time series with the Zags 17-0 before Monday's contest.
Bowman led four Gonzaga players in double-figure scoring. Forward Janelle Bekkering also scored 20 points, with guards Jami Bjorklund and Michelle Elliott knocking down 17 and 13 points, respectively.
Sophomore guard Sami Whitcomb led UW with a career-high 16 points to go along with five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Junior guard Michelle Augustavo scored a season-high 11 points on a trio of three-pointers.
UW freshman guard/forward Katelan Redmon, playing in front of her hometown crowd, was forced to sit out most of the first half after committing two early fouls.
The Huskies will next head to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic, Nov. 16-18.
