SEATTLE - Kiersten Dallstream's team-leading eighth goal proved to be the game-winner late Friday night as the Washington State women defeated Washington 2-1 in a Pac-10 women's contest at Husky Soccer Field.
A crowd of 1,304 braved the cold temperatures and steady downpour. They saw the Huskies control the run of play and out-shoot their cross-state rivals 16-6.
But it was the Cougars who got the win, improving to 9-2-2 with a 2-1 Pac-10 record. WSU beat the Huskies for the fourth straight time to go ahead 8-7-2 in the all-time series.
Washington's record fell to 4-9 and 1-2 in conference play.
"Our team played great tonight and I think we played well enough to win," said UW coach Lesle Gallimore. "We played great soccer, we created good chances. You have to finish your chances and get a bounce or two to go your way.
"I have no complaints about how our team lost tonight, which makes it a little more disappointing for the players. I felt like they played great soccer and worked hard, but it just didn't come out on our side tonight."
Allison Scurich gave WSU a 1-0 first-half lead on a header off a corner kick from Anna Miller. Scurich drove the ball into the goal from six yards out at 32:05. The goal came on the second shot of the game for the Cougars who had allowed seven UW attempts by that point.
Dallstream netted the second goal from directly in front of the goalmouth. She collected a rebound off a deflected shot by Carly Dobratz and slipped it into the mesh at 64:25.
The Huskies finally found the back of the net with their 13th shot, drawing within one at 73:25. Senior Shuree Hyatt (Kent, Wash./Kentlake) picked up a loose ball and dribbled toward the goal before scoring on a 12-yard strike. That was her team-high fifth goal.
Hyatt was dangerous all night, out-shooting WSU by herself with seven attempts. She had two near goals in the seventh minute. Her first was a shot from the left side that caromed off the crossbar. Hyatt gathered the rebound and her subsequent shot may have crossed the goal line. But Cougar goalkeeper Brynn Bemis smothered the ball to nullify the opportunity.
"My team insists that goal was in," Gallimore explained. "I think the referees might've missed one tonight that went over and didn't get called a goal. That's disappointing because that would've put us up 1-0 and that would've made the game totally different."
Bemis stopped five shots. Her UW counterpart, senior Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.), was not credited with a save.
The Washington women continue their three-game homestand next weekend. They host Oregon State, Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. and Oregon, Sunday, Oct. 28 at noon.
