SEATTLE - Senior Shuree Hyatt tallied her fourth goal in five games for the Washington women who tied Oregon State 1-1, Friday in a double-overtime Pac-10 contest at Husky Soccer Field.
The Huskies (4-9-1), who out shot OSU 20-10, saw their Pac-10 record move to 1-2-1. The Beavers (7-7-2) are 0-4-1 in conference games. This was the first tie between the Northwest rivals in the series that UW leads 13-3-1.
Hyatt scored on a six-yard strike in front of the goalmouth at 10:22. Robin Alexander (Broomfield, Colo.) received a pass from Jenna Robison (Livermore, Calif.) and served a cross into the box to set up Hyatt's team-leading sixth goal.
"It's clearly a game where I thought we'd get more goals than one," UW coach Lesle Gallimore remarked. "Shuree Hyatt has just been playing magnificently. Dani Bridges and Veronica Perez and Melissa Beal are also playing well, but at some point in time we need to start finishing. That's what this game is. We have to have more composure and more bite in and around the penalty area."
The Huskies have now out shot their last two opponents by a combined 36-16 margin, but have only a loss and tie to show for it. UW lost 2-1 to Washington State on Oct. 19 despite a 16-6 shot advantage.
A misplayed clearance attempt by the Huskies late in the game went over the end line and led to the Beavers goal.
Oregon State capitalized on the subsequent corner kick to net the equalizer at 83:53. Monica Storm's eight-yard header at the far post finished Courtney Wetzel's boot from the left corner.
"To give up that corner kick at that time of the game is downright unfortunate," said Gallimore. "You know when you give up a poor corner, those are the ones you are going to get punished on. It's tough for the kid that turned it over and it's tough for the team. But at the end of the day I'm proud of our team.
"We haven't played an overtime game in a long time. To hold the tie and not cave and not lose the game is important for us. We pushed forward and played to win in the overtime."
Washington dominated during its first overtime of the season, but was unable to score despite a 7-1 shot advantage during the extra sessions.
OSU goalkeeper Caitlin Seeley recorded five of her seven saves during the second, 10-minute overtime period to hold off the Huskies.
"It's difficult when your team battles that hard. I feel like we had the run of play," Gallimore said. "Oregon State's a good team, especially in their attack. They can hold balls, they can create chances and they are very good at playing direct and getting behind you. So, I was happy we contained them like we did."
Sophomore Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.) was credited with two saves for the Huskies.
The Washington women conclude their three-game homestand, Sunday, Oct. 28 against Oregon. Kick-off is noon at Husky Soccer Field.
