SEATTLE - Oregon State's Dallas Buck threw a three-hit shutout to out-duel Washington ace Tim Lincecum as the No. 3-ranked Beavers beat the Huskies 7-0, in the first game of a three- game Pac-10 series Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
The Beavers broke a 0-0 tie with three runs in the seventh inning and then pulled away with four more in the ninth to earn their sixth straight win.
Buck, probably the top candidate for Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year honors this season, upped his record to 10-1 while OSU improved to 37-8 overall and 15-4 in the Pac-10, good for first place, one game ahead of Arizona. Buck walked three and hit a batter, but struck out eight in his second complete game of the season.
Lincecum, the conference's Pitcher of the Year as a freshman last season, dropped to 6-6 on the season in the loss. He allowed three runs on four hits over seven innings, striking out nine, but walking eight. Washington dropped to 27-19 overall and 7-9 in the Pac-10 with the loss..
Despite the fact that the Huskies led the bases loaded in the fourth, thanks to two walks and an error, neither team managed a base hit until OSU shortstop Darwin Barney led off the sixth inning with an infield single. Beavers first baseman Andy Jenkins followed with a line-drive single to center, but both OSU runners were stranded as Lincecum got two strikeouts and a flyout to end the threat.
The Huskies finally notched their first hit when Taylor Johnson singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. After a walk and two outs put runners at first and second, Kyle Larsen very nearly put the UW on top when he laced a hard grounder up the middle. Barney, however, flagged the ball down behind second base and threw to first in time to retire Larsen.
The Beavers scratched out the game's first runs in the top of the seventh. A single and two walks loaded the bases with no outs. After an infield popout, Barney drove in Mike Lissman from third with a sacrifice fly. Jenkins followed with a single to right, scoring two more Beaver baserunners to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Barney added his second RBI on his second hit of the game and Mitch Canham drove in two with a single in the Beavers' four-run ninth inning.
Washington's second and third hits both came in the ninth when Matt Hague and Kyle Larsen both singled.
The series continues Saturday and Sunday with gametime set for 1:00 p.m. both games. Both of those games are schedule to air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150.
