Beavers Hand Huskies 7-4 Loss

SEATTLE - Oregon State catcher Mitch Canham belted a three-run homer in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie as the No. 3-ranked Beavers rolled to their seventh straight victory, a 7-4 win over Washington in a Pac-10 game Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
Canham and third baseman Shea McFeely hit back-to-back homers in the Beavers' four-run fifth inning. The rally got started with two outs and nobody on. Andy Jenkins singled and Cole Gillespie walked to set the table for Canham, who connected with his sixth homer of the year. McFeely's solo shot, his fourth of the season, gave Oregon State (38-8 overall, 16-4 in the Pac- 10) a 5-1 lead.
With the loss, Washington fell to 27-20 overall and 7-10 in the Pac-10. The Huskies, who have seven conference games remaining, would likely have to finish no worse than 12-12 in league play to hold any hope of making the NCAA tournament.
OSU got a second straight solid pitching performance. Freshman Anton Maxwell (9-1) followed Dallas Buck's three-hit shutout on Friday with a six-inning outing. Maxwell allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits, walking five and striking out four.
Washington took advantage of two walks, a wild pitch and an error to score a run in the first. With Brent Lillibridge at third and Zach Clem at first -- both aboard via walks -- Matt Hague popped a ball to shallow left field. After shortstop Darwin Barney caught the popup, he dropped it as he transferred the ball to throw it back into the infield allowing Lillibridge to tag from third and score on a ball that barely made it out of the infield.
The Huskies had another great scoring chance in the third as the Huskies loaded the bases with no outs on a single, a walk and a hit batter. However, Maxwell got a force at the plate on a grounder back to the mound, a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning with still on top by a 1-0 score.
In the top of the fourth, the Beavers tied the game at 1-1. Canham bunted his way aboard to lead off. After a walk but two runners on, designated hitter Mike Lissman singled through the left side, driving in Canham with the tying run.
After the Beavers had gone ahead 5-1 on the back-to-back homers, the UW got a run back in the sixth when Zach Clem singled and eventually came in to score on a Nick Batkoski groundout. However, OSU added two more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from McFeely and a bases- loaded walk.
Washington added its third run in the seventh when Curt Rindal was hit by a pitch and scored on a Mike Rundle single. In the ninth, a sacrifice fly from Taylor Johnson closed out the scoring.
Canham finished the day 3-for-4 with the homer and three RBI. Jenkins also collected two hits for the Beavers. Rundle was the only UW batter with two hits, going 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk. Brent Lillibridge drew four walks and singled for the Huskies.
Husky sophomore starter Kyle Parker (7-6) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits over five innings. OSU closer Kevin Gunderson threw the final two and two-thirds innings to pick up his 11th save.
Sunday's series finale, which will air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150, will get underway at 1:00 p.m.
