Pilots Knock Off Washington, 7-4

PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of Portland broke a string of 13 straight losses to Washington Tuesday, coming back to beat the Huskies, 7-4, in a non-conference game at Joe Etzel Field.
The Pilots (15-32) hadn't notched a win over the Huskies since a win early in the 2002 season. The win also broke a seven-game losing streak for Portland. Washington (27-18) had beaten UP in all three prior meetings this season, winning 8-1, 18-7 and 15-7. The game was the Huskies' first in nine days after not having played since May 1.
Portland trailed 2-0 in the fourth and 4-2 in the sixth before coming back with three in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh. Pilots second baseman Andrew Wrisley and center fielder Justin Ehlers each notched four hits in the game.
Reliever Stephen Ball (3-3) picked up the win. After entering the game to begin the third, he threw four innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Husky senior David Dowling (6- 1), who earned the victory in all three previous UW-Portland games this season, took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits over an inning and two-thirds.
Washington opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth.With Matt Hague at third and Curt Rindal at second, Nick Batkoski drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly. Freshman catcher Joey Dunn followed with a single through the left side of the infield, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
Portland had a good chance to reply in the bottom of the fourth. With runners at first and third with no outs, Nik Kosach tried to get a run with a safety squeeze bunt. However, his bunt attempt back to the mound was fielded by Kyle Parker, who threw home in plenty of time for Dunn to tag out Jason Krohn.
The Pilots went on to load the bases with one out, but the Huskies' third double play in as many innings ended the threat.
Portland did, however, rally to tie the game at 2-2 with two runs in the fifth. With one out and Justin Ehlers on first, Andrew Wrisley notched his third hit of the game, doubling to the left-field corner to drive in Ehlers. After an infield single put runners at the corners, Krohn successfully bunted to get Wrisley home from third, tying the game.
In the sixth, the Huskies took back the lead. With Kyle Larsen aboard on a single, Rindal smashed a pitch over the scoreboard in deep left-center to put the UW back on top, 4-2. The homer was the fourth in the last four games for Rindal, named the Pac-10 Player of the Week after the Huskies' most recent action, a sweep at WSU.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Pilots scored three to take their first lead. With runners at first and second with no outs, Cory Wiltshire faked a bunt, but then drew his bat back and bounced an RBI double down the first-base line. After an out, back-to-back singles from Ehlers and Wrisley, his fourth hit of the game, drove in runs to put the Pilots in front, 5-4.
Portland added a two more in the bottom of the seventh when Ehlers reached on a bases- loaded, two-out infield single. The hit was Ehlers' fourth of the day. UW freshman reliever than came on and, with Wrisley at bat, balked to send home the Pilots' seventh run.
Wrisley finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs batted in while Ehlers was 4-for-4 with two RBI. Hague was the only Husky with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Senior shortstop Brent Lillibridge went 0-for-2 and saw his 21-game hitting streak snapped.
The Huskies return home for their next seven games. This weekend, the UW plays host to No. 3 Oregon State in an important three-game series at Husky Ballpark. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday, first pitch is 1:00 p.m.
