
Washington Softball Tops Canadian National Team

SEATTLE- The seventh-ranked Washington softball team (13-5) defeated the Canadian National Team (9-1) 7-6 in eight innings this afternoon in an exhibition game. Game two of the double header was halted due to darkness after two innings with the score knotted at 3-3.
The Huskies collected 14 hits in the opener and overcame a three-run deficit to hand Team Canada its first loss of the season.
Canada jumped out to the quick lead with a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Alison Bradley.
Washington answered in the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits to take the 3-2 lead. Freshman Robyn Wike led off the frame with a single to the short stop and advanced to third on a single by Aimee Minor. Minor moved to second on a passed ball and a walk to Dominique Lastrapes loaded the bases with one out.
Sarah Hyatt delivered a clutch single to score two and a Kathy Fiske single into center field plated Lastrapes to put UW on top 3-2.
Team Canada responded in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits and two Husky errors. Sasha Olson and Kristy Odamura each tallied a RBI and Angela Lichty drove in a pair of runs to go up 6-3.
Washington roared back in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to tie the score at six apiece. Wike drew a leadoff walk and Lastrapes followed with a double down the left field line. Rita Roach then hit into a fielder's choice and Wike scored when the catcher dropped the ball from the third baseman. Lastrapes took advantage on the play and also scored on the play when the ball rolled to the backstop. A Kristen Rivera single into right field scored Roach to even the score 6-6.
Niether team could plate a runner in the seventh inning, pushing the game into extra-innings. The international tiebreaker went into effect, beginning the inning with a runner on second base.
Relief pitcher Ashley Boek shut down Canada in the eighth inning, notching a pair of strikeouts and getting a ground ball out.
The Huskies scored the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth on two hits. With Roach starting the inning on second base, Team Canada intentionally walked Rivera. Callie Bergan followed with a single to the short stop and senior Amanda Oleson delivered the game-winner with a single into centerfield.
In the nightcap, the Canadian National Team scored three runs in the first inning on four hits.
Washington cut the lead to two with a run in the bottom half of the frame. The Huskies put runners in first and second when Minor and Rivera drew walks. Dena Tyson then singled to left field to score Minor.
The Huskies pulled even in the second inning, scoring two runs on two hits and a Canada error. Wike reached base after being hit by a pitch and Courtney Jeffries reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in no outs. Minor singled to left field to score pinch runner Jaime Rau and a single by Hyatt scored Minor to make the score 3-3.
The game was called after the second inning due to darkness.
