With the win, Washington advances to play Creighton in the second round of the WNIT. The Huskies will host the Blue Jays on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Senior Giuliana Mendiola's six assists in tonight's game brought her single-season total to 166, surpassing by four the UW single-season record she set in 2002-03. Mendiola's 666 career assists are the most in UW history, with Leteia Hughley's 559 a distant second.
The win improves Washington to 3-0 all-time in first-round WNIT games. All three of those games were at Bank of America Arena, where the Huskies boast a 4-2 record all-time in WNIT play.
The Huskies put two players over the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season, and the first since Feb. 21. In all but one of those instances, the double was performed by Giuliana Mendiola and Andrea Lalum, who shared 20-plus point honors tonight.
Andrea Lalum led all Washington scorers with 22 points, snapping of string of 13-consecutive games in which Giuliana Mendiola had finished as the team's leading scorer. Prior to tonight, the last player other than Mendiola to lead the team in scoring was freshman Breanne Watson, against Oregon on Jan. 17.
Lalum added a season-high 11 rebounds to her 22 points for her second double-double of the season, and 11th of her career. Mendiola just missed a double-double of her own, recording nine assists and six rebounds to go along with her 20 points.
After the Waves closed to within four points, at 13-9, with 12:01 to play in the first half, Washington mounted a 22-8 run over the next 6:55 to open a 35-17 lead.
The Huskies held Pepperdine without a basket for the first 5:49 of the contest, before former Oregon State Beaver Nicole Funn notched a layin to break the streak.
