LONG BEACH, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Washington softball team (2-1) split a pair of games this evening to move to 2-1 at the Long Beach State Invitational. The Huskies dropped a 5-3 game to top-ranked UCLA and defeated Long Beach State 3-0.
In the opener, Washington scored in the opening frame on a squeeze play. Freshman Dominique Lastrapes (Laguna Hills, Calif.) slapped an infield single to the shortstop and advanced to second base on an over throw to first. Senior Courtney Jeffries (Eugene, Ore.) moved Lastrapes to third with a sacrifice bunt and senior Amanda Oleson executed a perfect squeeze bunt to score Lastrapes.
UCLA posted three runs in the top of the second inning on two hits. Emily Zaplatosch walked and scored on a double by Jodie Legasi. Kristen Dedmon followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Bruins the 3-1 lead.
The Huskies answered in the bottom half of the frame with one run. Sophomore Dena Tyson (Corona, Calif.) led off the inning with a double to left center field and stole third base. Aimee Minor (San Jacinto, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Tyson and cut the UCLA lead to one.
Washington pulled even in the third inning on a pair of hits and a Bruin error. Kathy Fiske (Temecula, Calif.) led off with a single to right field and moved into scoring position on a ground out. Fiske scored from second base on a towering infield pop fly to first base that was dropped by Claire Sua.
UCLA responded with two runs in the fifth inning to put the game away. A pair of singles sandwiched by a UW error loaded the bases. Lisa Dodd hit a flare into shallow left-centerfield to score two runs to make the score 5-3.
Senior All-American Tia Bollinger (1-1) took the loss as she gave up nine hits, while striking out five.
In the nightcap, the game remained scoreless through five innings. Washington's bats became hot in the top of the sixth as three hits and two Long Beach State errors resulted in the only three runs of the game.
Jeffries led off with a single to centerfield and advanced to second on a fielding error. Oleson followed with a single to the third baseman and a second 49er error moved Jeffries to third. Fiske was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Dawgs with one out. Hyatt then drew a walk to score Jeffries for the game-winner.
Washington added two insurance runs when freshman Robyn Wike doubled to left field.
Ashley Boek picked up the win (1-0) and the shutout. She held Long Beach State to six hits, while striking out eight.
The Huskies wrap-up tournament action tomorrow with a 9 a.m. game against Santa Clara and an 11 a.m. game against San Diego State.
